Austin Joins 800 Cities Worldwide To Celebrate Summer Solstice AUSTIN, Texas — On June 21, the summer solstice, Austin will join 800 cities worldwide in a singular celebration of music as our universal language — and everyone’s invited to participate. Solstice Austin, the local version of the ever-spreading Solstice celebration, is a citywide festival in which any place from a porch to a palace can become a venue and any person can become a player. More than 50 venues, both traditional and non-traditional, already have signed up, along with more than 130 acts. And local organizer Special Events Live wants more to join the party. Performers and hosts may sign up until June 5 to help plug the “Live Music Capital of the World” into a planetwide celebration. The Solstice concept was born 32 years ago in France as “Fete de la Musique” and it has since spread organically to take place in more than 800 cities in 108 countries. New York City was the site of the first stateside celebration eight years ago; that city now hosts over 1,000 performances each summer solstice. This year, 19 U.S. cities including Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Chicago are among North American participants.
